Church survival bag

A couple of weeks back I shared a post by God Life Church entitled Long Live the church. The original post viewed the decline in church membership like a disaster movie, with a plague spreading, and the need for humans to come together and do something.

Now those who follow such films and genre will know of the survival bag – a bag packed with the things to get through the asteroid stick, zombie apocalypses or what ever. S it got me thinking, what would I put in the Methodist Church is survival bag, the things worth taking with us.

  • The Class Meeting – the small groups that are intended for spiritual development, the deepening of faith and pastoral care. I’d put this in the bag because of all the above things. But also due to the origin of them, that it was a practical origin of collecting the penny to pay back the loan on the New Rooms. The ability to take something very practical and find a way to use it for the work is something important to me.
  • The Priesthood of All Believers – Now first this is not a case that everyone does everything, no it is a case that every one could do anything. The fact that in the church we are all equal, some are called to different tasks, and some do them, in this way it is not that every one does everything, but that they can. Also a key part of this is that access to God is not limited to a special few, but that all can and should interact with God.
  • Connexinalism – The interlinking of congregations and people. We are all working in the local, but people can support each other across the wider world. In this case the mutual support that can be seen here is important.

There are likely other things that would get put in the bag, what would you put in?

Thinking about Connexionality

Within Methodism there is the concept of connectionality, that we are all part of the one (much as Paul speaks of the one body), and that as a church we do things locally, but also together. So here is a reflection on that:

Together

Supporting and sharing
giving from plenty
to where there is scarcity.
Supporting and sharing
going with skills
to where they are needed.
Supporting and sharing
holding and being
where they are.
Supporting and sharing
many places and people
coming together as one.

All we can

Many years ago one Mr Wesley – some time fellow of Lincoln College – made, or we think he did the following statement:

“Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.”

and from this what was know as “The Methodist Relief and Development Fund”, became in 2014, “All we can: Methodist Relief and Development“, so here is a reflection upon the work they do:

All we can

Doing things

that need to be done.

Being in places

where there is a need to be.

Thinking of issues

for which there needs to be thought.

Acting in ways

and at the time to act.

For people, places,

means and actions,

all we can.

The Conference

The Conference

Gathered,
drawn together.
From all corners
and places.
To confer and
to discuss.
To try and come to
know the will.
To try and hear
the still small voice.
To try and understand
the purpose before us.
To try and see
through the glass darkly.
Coming to a mind
as best we can.

Re Bloging: Renewing my Covenant with God

I would have this as a normal re-blog, but can’t figure out how. Any way Ruth Gee’s comments on the Methodist Covenant service. I could happily turn this into tomorrows sermon.

Renewing my Covenant with God

Expectantly waiting to glimpse God’s glory

Expectantly waiting to glimpse God’s glory

Wait with expectation
for what may come
to glimpse God’s glory
as it comes.

To be passed by
and to see the
presence here among us
as it goes ever on.

Is God among us?
Do we see God passing
in the darkness?
Do we glimpse the glory?

In expectation let us
wait to glimpse the glory
it is here with us
if only we can see it.

This poem was written in response to the Presidential address of Rev’d Ruth Gee, the Presidents of Conference for the Methodist Church in Britain, 2013-14.

Cyflwynwyd i eisteddiad y synod o Synod Cymru 20 Ebrill 2013

Parch. A. James Patron Bell

Ac wrth fynd o ddoe i’r ‘fory newydd draw

gad I minnau afael yn dy law (Caneuon Ffydd 800)

Wedi cael fy galw i’r weinidogaeth, mi nes brwydro yn ei erbyn. Ond dyma ni yn dod i ymgeisio ac nes sôn am hyn yn fy Gwasanaeth Tystiolaethu yn Canolfan St Paul, Aberystwyth ar nos Iau y 16 o fis Mai. Ond beth yw’r profiad ar ôl cael fy derbyn. Dyma ni yn mynd trwy’r coleg, ac cael ei danfon i’r penodiad cyntaf yn Llanbed.

Dyma profiad braf i’w fod yn weinidog ar brawf. Mae hyn yn cyfnod o dal cael ein profi, ac gweld os ydym yn teilwng am y gwaith ac i fynd yn mlaen i cael ein hordeinio. Dyma angen gwneud astudiaeth pellach, ac gyda hyn ddod i ddysgu ac arfer hefo yr gwaith weinidogol.

Ond wrth wneud y gwaith hyn roedd angen myfyrio ac ystyried ar ein gwaith fel Capeli. ac fel Capeli Fethodistaidd. Nawr gyda hyn y cwestiwn syn codi ydy beth i’w ein dyfodol, ac beth i’w ein galwad.

Mi ydym wedi ein codi gan Dduw yn rhan o’r Eglwys Sanctaidd Catholig cyffredinol, ac yn cael ei gweld yn rhan o’r traddodiad ehangach. Ac wedi ein codi i lledaenu Sancteiddrwydd Ysgrythurol.

Ond sut ydym am wneud hyn? Mae agen cyntaf gofyn: Beth i’w yr beth syn gosod ni arwhawn? Beth ydy’r beth unigryw am y Fethodistaidd? A oes genom ni rhywbeth i gynnig? Mae rhaid mi ddweud bod genom ni rywbeth, ac bod galwad arnom i edrych yn mlaen. Mae hyn yn gallu cael ei weld pam rydym yn dweud be syn cael ei alw yr “Four All’s” yn Seisnig:

  • Mae pob un angen eu hachub

  • Gall pob un gael eu hachub

  • Gall pob un gwybod ei bod wedi eu hachub

  • Gall pob un gael eu hachub yn llwyr

Dyma datganiad canolig o’n cred fel Eglwys Fethodistaidd, ac mae gofyn i ni holi ydym dal i credu hyn. A gallom rhannu hyn ar byd o’n cwmpas? Mae gofyn i ni cynnig y ffydd Cristnogol fel ydym yn ei gweld hi, nid fel ffordd gwell na neb arall. Ond fel un ffordd i Dduw. Ac o hyn mi gododd ei cyn Tadau a Mamau, ei llefydd pregethu pam daethant at ei gilith mewn nifer fawr.

Mae gofyn camu yn mlaen i pethau newydd, i darganfod beth ydy’r pethau newydd hyn. Sut rydym am cyd fynd ar byd modern. Mae pethau wedi newid o ein cwmpas, ac mae galw i ni darganfod ffyrdd o cyd ymwneud a hyn. Mae galwad – ac mae hyn wedi bod yn rhan o’r taith fel weinidog ar prawf – i ni ceisio y pethau hyn. Mi fydd galwad i ni cael ein trawsnewid, ond nid i’w hyn hefyd yn rhan o ein galwad fel Christnogion? Mae’n posib defnyddio ein hadeiladau i hyn. Cynnig lle i grŵp rhieni a phlant bach cael cyfarfod. Ond mae hefyd angen gweld fod rhai o’n hadeiladau yn anaddas at y diben, ac angen cael ei trawsnewid.

Mae gofyn fynd i cyfarfod a pobl lle mae nhw, ac mewn dull ac ffyrdd syn dealladwy i nhw. Rydym bron a bod mewn lle tebyg i’r sant Celtaidd, gyda rhan mwyaf o pobl yn dallt bron i ddim am ein ffydd. Mae’r galwad hyn yn codi ofn. Ond gallwn camu yn mlaen hefo gras Duw.

Os gallwn edrych ar emyn 801 yn Caneuon Ffydd, gwelwn yma ein galwad, ar gwahoddiad i camu yn mlaen gyda Duw, ac ddod i cyd camu gyda Crist. Yn nerth yr Ysbryd.
